peak oil in the complacent south
Even the Atlanta Journal and Constitution is expressing sincere concerns about the reality of peak oil. And not about whether it will happen. They're talking about whether it already has.

The idea that oil is in an infinite resources is just ridiculous. Whether or not oil has peaked yet, or if it will peak in 10 years, is not the issue. The issue is that at some point there will be a decrease in oil worldwide and that viable alternatives for fuel need to be discussed now before oil is $200 a barrel (which has been forecasted). Studies have shown that US oil peaked in '73 and that a majority of the Saudi giant and supergiant fields have peaked as well. It is not so much about the price of gas this summer, but what about the price for future generations. Americans tend to live so much in "the now" or in the "the good old days", that they do not look forward to their future generations and what their quality of life will be. When gas was $.69 a gallon when I was in college, someone should have been talking about oil comsumption and world oil levels, but only a few people were. Now that it's over $2.00 people are talking, but most people say they won't change their driving/ travel habits until it's over $4.00. That is called ignorance. Seeing a problem and doing nothing about, even on a personal level, is irresponsible. We can all do small things to lessen our personal dependence on this dwindling resource.
Amen! It's all about personal change...no point in preaching it if you're not willing to live it.
