oh the irony

Here's something ironic. Melting ice in the Artic, in addition to destroying polar bear habitats and raising sea levels, could also open up new shipping routes in the region--making it easier and less expensive to get Artic oil. Is this some strangely twisted version of poetic justice? Talk about a feedback loop.

The real question is, how far will we go down this path before we start thinking about other species and generations besides ourselves?

That's awesome! We can put off worrying about peak oil or whatever it is you were talking about before.

Phew, glad we dodged that bullet.

See? Climate change isn't bad; it's just different.

Ha, that's a funny post Matt :) I looked into peak oil for a bit the other day ( I must admit I had never heard the term before although I was moderately aware of the general concept) and it seems like peak oil is not so much of an environmental issue (actually might be good for the environment: less oil produced = less fossil fuels consumed) but really just an enormous economic issue. Once global oil production begins to permanantly decline it seems like prices will increase markedly as consumption continues to increase (without viable alternatives)... Just curious, but with your strong opinion on oil prices, have you invested in any oil ETFs? Do you believe in peak oil enough to put your money on it...

Are you kidding? All my money's in alternative transportation...I don't care how high the price of oil goes; I ain't making any money on that devil's game. ;-)

omg!! This reminds me of the EPA report on global warming that came out in Bush's first term. Remember it? It admitted that global warming was occurring, but noted that it offered new economic opportunities--citrus orchards, for example, in (not yet but soon to be) tropical regions. Who says this global warming stuff isn't great?
