Bottle houses were first constructed by prospectors in Nevada because timber was in short supply but beer bottles were plentiful.

I'm glad LED lights were mentioned on one of the sites you linked to. They're awesome, and you can get them in lots of fun shapes! Plus, they are less likely to start a fire, which is important, since, you know, burning your house down isn't a good way to reduce your carbon footprint. ;-)
